Claire Blumenfeld embraced the enchantment of picture books while teaching kindergarten and first grade students for eleven years. The spell took further hold as she shared her kidlit infatuation with her two children during a ten year stretch of full-time parenting. Eager to craft her own stories, Claire completed the Writing for Children’s course at the Institute of Children’s Literature between naps and offloaded playdates. She soon published articles in Hopscotch, Listen Magazine, Bay State Parent, and The MRA primer. She also won first prize for a PB writing contest with The American Dream Group, Inc.
Claire gathered her collective passion for children, books and writing and returned to graduate school earning a K-12 Reading Specialist master’s degree from Lesley University. With this credential, she secured a reading specialist position, accumulating an additional ten years of teaching experience and a deeper understanding of the need for language-rich, highly engaging picture books.
It had always been Claire’s dream to return to writing and recently rejoined SCBWI, and took classes with CBA, Laura Backes, and Julie Hedlund. She now focuses her writing on heartfelt picture books layered with STEM, SEL, and humor.
Claire toggles between Boston and Brewster, MA alongside her husband with whom she can be seen zipping around the neighborhood as she buzzes about her latest picture book ideas. Calmer moments include reading, beach combing, and perusing indie bookstores.
